Netscape Related Questions

2.1
Q. I get a message some times that says "Error Type 11" what do they mean?
A. A Type 11 error means an illegal interrupt vector on a 680x0 machine. On a Power Macintosh, a Type 11 error is any exception in native code not handled by one of the installed exception handlers. On a Power Macintosh, a Type 11 error can be almost any error that occurred in native code. Type 11 errors may include:
  • an address error
  • a bus error
  • an illegal instruction error that occurred in native code
These errors are related to the famous type 1 error that occurs when data is left at an address by a program, and isn't there when the program wants to retrieve it later.

On a PowerMac, type 11 errors have almost entirely replaced type 1 errors.

The errors are often caused by extensions and/or control panels moving things around in memory.

It can also be caused by the use of ram that is too slow for the machine, or by a mixture of ram speeds inside the machine.

Possible Solutions:

  • Rebooting will clear the RAM, and holding down CMD-P-R will clear the PRAM.
  • Type 11 errors are often seen when Virtual memory is on. Go to your Control Panel and make sure the Virtual Memory is off. If you are using either RamDoubler or OptiMem, make sure they are disabled.
  • If problems persist follow these "Basics"
    1. Rebuild the desktop (see + below)
    2. Give Netscape more memory
    3. Trash Netscape Preferences, the Cache folder, and NewsFAT
    4. Increase the Disk Cache
    5. Run MacTools or Norton Disk Doctor
    6. Increase Netscape's buffer size & decrease the maximum number of connections
    7. Upgrade to MacTCP 2.0.6
    8. Reinstall MacTCP or MacPPP
+ To rebuild the Desktop: Restart your computer while holding down the "option" and "open-apple" keys simultaneously.

General PPP/TCP Questions

Q. After dialing the phone number and going through the "Establishment" phase, PPP responds with a "Link Dead" message.

6.2
Q. When I try to dial in, I get an error that says PPP wait timeout; Waiting on: OK

14,40028,800
Try 1st28,80057,600
Try 2nd19,20038,400

These are the portspeeds of your computer, these speeds are in relation to the maximum speed your computer can handle not the advertised speed of your modem. Please refer to your computers documentation for further information.

6.3
Q. The "Open" box in the "ConfigPPP" screen is gray.
